Unquestionably, America is an entrepreneurial nation. Here are some compelling facts from the National Commission on Entrepreneurship (NCOE):
- 67% of inventions and 95% of all radical innovations produced since World War II are attributable to entrepreneurs.
- In the late 1960s, one in four persons went to work for a Fortune 500 firm, in 1980 it was one in five, in the late 1990s it was an astounding one in fourteen.
- Informal investors – friends, family and work associates of people starting new businesses – create the lion’s share of the estimated $56 billion of initial funding for new businesses.
- In the United States about 600,000 to 800,000 businesses are started each year, a phenomenal birthrate of 14 to 16 startups for every 100 existing businesses.
- About 5-15% of the United States’ approximately 6,000,000 businesses create the majority of net new jobs.
However, in the area of economic growth, one form of entrepreneurship has earned unique distinction. Designated by the NCOE, this type of business creation comprises a relatively small portion of the nation’s business base – only about 350,000 firms out of 6 million U.S. businesses with employees. Yet, this small base of companies, which grow at an annual rate of at least 15-20%, created two-thirds of net new jobs during the 1990s. This special kind of business development is called Growth Entrepreneurship.
